Start with Tbilisi and Mtskheta

For most travelers, Tbilisi is the easiest starting point because the main private routes begin from the city. Old Tbilisi gives you sulfur baths, Narikala, Metekhi, Sameba, the Bridge of Peace, and the warm rhythm of the capital. Mtskheta adds Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, two important religious stops that fit naturally into a first-day or one-day cultural route.

Choose mountains by time and season

Kazbegi is the classic mountain day from Tbilisi, with Zhinvali, Ananuri, Gudauri, Jvari Pass, Stepantsminda, and Gergeti Trinity Church. Svaneti is a longer high-mountain route through Mestia and Ushguli, with Svan towers, Lamaria Church, long roads, and strong Caucasus scenery. In winter, Gudauri and Bakuriani work better for snow, ski stops, and cold-season mountain air.

Add wine, caves, and western Georgia

Kakheti is the main wine direction, with Signagi, Bodbe Monastery, family wine and brandy tasting, churchkhela, bread baking, and views over the Alazani Valley. Gori and Uplistsikhe add history and a rock-cut ancient town. Kutaisi connects Bagrati, Gelati, Prometheus Cave, and Martvili Canyon, which works well inside longer routes toward western Georgia.

Use Borjomi, Vardzia, and Batumi for longer routes

Borjomi gives a forest-and-mineral-water stop with Central Park and fresh mountain air. Akhaltsikhe, Rabati Castle, Khertvisi Fortress, and Vardzia create a strong southern Georgia route. Batumi and the Black Sea make sense when you are already traveling west, especially if the route includes Kutaisi, Svaneti, Mestia, and Ushguli before returning to Tbilisi.

How to pick the right private tour

Pick by time first, then by pace. One day is good for Mtskheta, Kazbegi, Kakheti, Borjomi, or Gori and Uplistsikhe. Six to eight days gives a calmer plan with Tbilisi, mountains, wine country, Kutaisi, Borjomi, or western Georgia. A private guide-driver helps keep the route realistic because timing, roads, parking, stops, and weather changes are handled inside one plan.
